Freshwater Microbial Communities

Compositon

Allochthonus microorgaisms are found in rivers. Autotrophic bactera are auochhous members of lake water. Memers of this genera are – Flavobacrium, Micrococcus , Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Sreptomyces and Vibrio.

Cyanobacteria incldes Mycrocystis, Anabaena tht ca be dominant plankton in freshwater habitats . Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, Thiobacillus are essential members of freshwater icrobial communities.

Many fungi in freshwater lakes, rivers and streams associated with foreign organic matter are considered as allochthonus members. Ascomycetes and Fungi imperfecti are found on wood and dead plant materials in rivers and lakes.Yeasts for example, Candida, Rhodotorula and Cryptococcus are comon in freshwater microorganisms.

Freshwater algae are Chlorophycophyta, Cryptophycophyta and green algae – Dinoflagellates.

Most common protozoa found in freshwater microbial communities are – Paramaceum, Vorticella, Amoeba.

Ecological Functions

  1) They decompose dead organic material liberating mineral nutrients.

2)They assimilate and reintroduce into the food web dissolved organic matter.

  3)  They perform mineral cycling activities.

  4)  They contribute to primary production.

  5)  They serve as a food source for grazers.
