AI in Fashion Design: Shaping the Future of Bangladesh’s RMG Industry

Seminar at country’s largest textile exhibition highlights opportunities and challenges of Artificial Intelligence in garments sector

The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming Bangladesh’s Ready-Made Garments (RMG) and fashion industry came into sharp focus at a high-profile seminar titled “Integrating Artificial Intelligence into Bangladesh’s RMG and Fashion Industry: Opportunities and Challenges”, held during the country’s largest textile exhibition organized by CEMS Global International. The event was co-organized by the Fashion Design & Technology (FDT) Department of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology (SMUCT).

The session, moderated by S.M. Sudrul Amin, Assistant Professor at SMUCT, brought together leading voices from both academia and industry. Panelists included Mr. Niaz Morshed, Sourcing Director at Fleet Clothing, UK; Mr. Shohel Anwar Apu, Assistant Professor at SMUCT; and Mr. Fuad Chowdhury, Fashion Designer at Eco Sourcing Limited.

Speakers pointed out that AI is revolutionizing global fashion and textile landscapes—from predicting consumer trends and enabling smart design to streamlining supply chain management and ensuring quality control. They stressed that Bangladesh, as the world’s second-largest garment exporter, must adapt quickly to remain competitive.

“Artificial Intelligence is no longer an option but a necessity for our RMG sector. It can enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and open doors to high-value fashion innovation,” said one of the panelists during the discussion.

While the opportunities are vast, challenges remain. Panelists identified high implementation costs, workforce up skilling, and the need for stronger industry-academia partnerships as critical barriers. They urged policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize investment in research, training, and digital infrastructure to fully harness AI’s potential.

The seminar attracted a wide audience, including industry leaders, academicians, entrepreneurs, students, and international participants, underlining growing global interest in Bangladesh’s readiness for an AI-driven future.

Experts concluded that integrating AI is not just a technological upgrade, but a strategic imperative for ensuring sustainability, efficiency, and long-term growth in the nation’s most vital export sector.
