Events in The Development of Microbial Ecology
Microbial Ecology is the science of the relationships
between biotic and abiotic environments.
This term came into frequently use in the early 1960s.
Some major events of Microbial ecology :
1676 - Leeuwenhoek
described microbes including bacteria.
1799 - Spallanzani disproved the spontaneous generation of microorganisms.
1861 - Pasteur demolished
the spontaneous generation theory of microorganisms.
1866 - Haeckel introduced
the term ecology.
1879 - Scholesing and Muntz described microbial nitrification.
1883 - Koch used solid media for isolation and culture of
bacteria.
1887 - Wingradsky developed the concept of chemotherapy.
1905 - Beijerinck characterised his work as the study of
microbial ecology.
1929 - Discovery of penicillin by Fleming.
1957 - Symposium on microbial ecology in London.
1980 - Woese described archaea as a separate domain.
1985 - Invention of polymerase chain reaction.
