Prerequisites
in Economically Practicable Industrial Microbiology
Prerequisites to economically practicable
industrial microbiology processes are the following in terms of the organisms,
the medium and the product.
1. Organism
The organism must be industrially potent
microbe, the microbe which is not only helpful for industries but also helpful
in producing large and appreciable amount of products. It should have relatively
stable characteristics and be able to grow rapidly and vigorously. It should be
nonpathogenic.
2. Medium
The medium including the substrate from which
the organism produces the new products.
The ingredients of the medium must be cheap
and readily available in large quantities.
The medium should be able to utilize
nutrients containing waste from the industries.
For example, whey the byproduct of dairy
industry and molasses the byproduct of sugar industry.
3. The Product
The product formed by metabolism of the
microbes is present in.a heterogeneous mixture that include tremendous crop of
microbial cells and used constituents of the medium as well as products.
