Differences between Disinfectants and Antiseptics |
Differences between Disinfectants
and Antiseptics
Disinfectants
1) They kill microbes on inorganic objects
2) Disinfectants are strong and more toxic
3) Destroys cell wall of microbes or interferes with
the metabolism of microbes
4) Bacteriocidal
5) Used to disinfect or clean products or
instruments
6) Example- alcohols, formaldehyde, chlorine dioxide
Antiseptics
1) They kill or prevents microbes on living
tissues
2) Antiseptics are harmless or should be
non-inflammatory to skin
3) Transports through the lymphatic system and
destroy bacteria within the human body or animals
4) Bacteriocidal or bacteriostatic dependiry on
concentration
5) Used to clean wounds or surgical sites to prevent
infection and other complications
6) Example- iodine, H2O2, boric
